Welcome to the New Year at Maya! Connecting with Shannon

1/3/2016

PictureShannon Aldrich Payne

 Come, come, whoever you are...
Ours is not a caravan of despair
Even if you have broken your vow
 a thousand times
 Come, yet again.
 ~Rumi

Each year around this time, I hear the occasional “bah-humbug” in regard to the tradition of New Year resolutions- friends and family pointing out rightfully that any day is a good day to start anew (or more pessimistically that these resolutions always seem to get broken, so why bother).

While it’s true that I can make a resolution any and every day of the year, the changing of the calendar year provides a visceral prompt to set new intentions, in unison with others.  it's feng shui for the soul's interior design and a glorious union in committing to new and improved habits.

In an oft-too-cynical world, optimism is uplifting- regardless of whether I actually manage to learn Spanish or remember birthdays, get in a 10 minute meditation every day, or whatever else it is that I’m inclined to want to do more, better, differently.  The hopefulness feels good- as expressed in the famous poem by Rumi- and that is a hallmark of emotional health.

On the flip side, I have witnessed loved ones making resolutions that are inherently abusive.  Whether the abuse is physical, mental, or verbal… these types of resolutions do not serve the cause of love or health- though it might masquerade as that.  When we establish resolutions for ourselves that imply that we are not good enough unless or until, fill-in-the-blank, we are defeating ourselves from the get go, sending a message that degrades and subverts efforts to enjoy this life more.  As we move into the year, if the intention we set is based on heavy-handed punishing, denying, or forcing ourselves or others into a different behavior, this is not likely to lead us to a more joyful existence in this life- and isn’t that the point?

Picture
Are you resolving to get more exercise because you want to feel good in your body and participate in activities that bring you joy?  Or because you are afraid that you will not be loved as much if your body is not a certain size or shape? Love and fear can be so entangled at times, it might be difficult to sort out the bottom line.

The whole health model at Maya is based on principles of self-love, rather than punishment.  This is why we do not participate in the popular marketing tactics used by many fitness facilities of fear-mongering around fat and body image.  We do not promote punishing styles of movement in our studio, but rather movement that strengthens, loosens, and opens channels in our body for ease of movement and flow.

All of the services and products we promote are aligned with the idea of loving and nurturing yourself with all of your senses. This creates a positive cycle- as you feel better in your body, your anxiety decreases and your joy increases, so does your energy and desire to care for yourself. Based on testimonials of Maya clients, this dynamic process leads to a more sustainable positive result in the way you look, feel, and function in life.

For 2016, I resolve to keep Maya on the same path, bringing positive whole health options to our community.  I resolve to develop greater means of communication with all of you, and new opportunities to help shape what Maya will become. As we move into our 7th year of operation in the Renton location, I hope you will join me in making resolutions that are healthy and positive, and support your ability to live your life from a place of empowerment.

With Love,
Shannon

Creating the Vision:: Connecting with Terry Gough

12/30/2015

PictureTerry Gough
When it comes to manifesting desires, often having a visual reference is a handy way to "see" your future. New Years are about clean slates, new directions, or even the ignition of a favorite old hobby. Maybe you have an idea of how you'd like the next year to look, but are still scattered on the details. Or, you know exactly what you want and creating a road map might help guide the universe that way.

PictureVision Board
Creating a Vision Board can fulfill several functions:
  • Specific goals; write a novel, run a marathon
  • Intentions; get in shape, plant a garden
  • Ideas: design a tree house, build a sanctuary
  • Dreams; vacations, careers, family
  • Change; deepen spirituality, define peace

Build one or more, the possibilities are not only endless, they are all yours.

On Friday January 1st, I am offering a workshop that will include yoga, meditation, and of course, creating your vision board. Join me from 11:00am-1:00pm and start 2016 with intention!

Seasonal Medicine:: Connecting with Dr. Sean Bradley

12/29/2015

Picture
Winter is right around the corner. On December 22, we moved from Autumn to Winter, getting ready for 3 months of cold, wet weather. Although you may get out the blankets, coats, and hats, you may not make the internal changes needed to see you through the season.

Winter is a heavy, silent time of year. It's a time of hibernation, of going inside, both physically and energetically. Adapting to the change in season is an age old practice, but how many actually do? Have you taken the steps to ensure your health and well-being throughout?

PictureDr. Sean Bradley
As a doctor of Naturopath and Acupuncture I have developed a workshop around seasonal medicine designed for winter time wellness.  What can my workshop teach you?

  • Learn how to bring your body into harmony with seasonal shift into winter.
  • Discover healing methods from a Naturopathic and Chinese Medicine perspective.
  • Learn how these seasonal changes affect your health, and how you can better prepare to stay healthy.

Price Increases in 2016

12/12/2015

Picture
Good News!  On January 1st, 2016, Maya Whole Health Studio is increasing prices on classes and most class packages for the first time in over 6 years.  The pricing for other services will also increase, in keeping with current trends. You might be inclined to ask, "How is this good news?"  Here's how- this price increase allows us to continue providing you the highest quality instructors, health practitioners, and personalized attention that has become a hallmark of our integrative health community.

Since we opened our doors at Maya Whole Health Studio, we have diligently sought out and retained the very best staff we could find- skilled professionals who have a deep passion for cultivating the health and well-being of our clients and patients.  In addition to our fabulous team of instructors and practitioners, our operations team working behind the front desk and even further behind the scenes do more than most anyone can imagine to ensure that Maya Whole Health Studio provides a wonderful and welcoming experience for you.  While it's true that our Maya staff do their jobs for the love as much as for the paycheck- well, they probably would work for free, if they could. But I'm pretty sure anyone who has been a client for any time at Maya can agree that the dedication and energy our staff bring to their work deserves recognition and compensation- and by raising the prices for our classes and services, we can make sure that our beloved staff is fairly compensated for the excellent work they do, so they can keep doing it!

Picture
More GOOD NEWS is that the economy has greatly improved from where it was 6 years ago- and the area near the studio has been booming with new development.  While we are glad to see tides rising (at least in that regard), it does mean that keeping the doors open and lights on at Maya Whole Health Studio costs more.  Most of our overhead costs have taken a steep turn upwards in the past couple years, so we need our community to contribute more to manage those costs.  Thus far, everyone who has heard the news has been supportive and positive, encouraging a bright future of Maya Whole Health and our mission of expanding health, fitness, and joy in our community and beyond.  Several of you have shared your joy in Maya and the benefits it has brought to your life, and that has been so gratifying over these past years- it has truly meant the world and provided the inspiration for us to continue to invest in this endeavor- even when times have been tough.  Through faith and sacrifice on the part of many, we have made it through those tough times, and plan to continue for years to come, growing and building on what we've created. We're glad you're in it with us.

Meet Malia Dullanty:: Community Outreach Coordinator

12/9/2015

Malia gets the donation basket ready!

After growing up in Maple Valley, my family and I spent most of 2015 living and working in Oaxaca, Mexico. Now that I've returned to the Pacific Northwest, I'm happy to have found Maya Whole Health Studio and the opportunity to join the Maya Team as Outreach Coordinator where I can grow my passion for holistic health and altruistic work. Because of my background working with non-profit organizations, I'm eager to help Maya partner with local non-profits and engage the Renton community. Next year I'm hoping to revisit past partnerships and create new ones with local grassroots non-profits (I would love and appreciate any suggestions you have that are near and dear to your heart).

My husband Mark and I have two children; our son Rory who is 3 years old and our daughter Jinora who is just 1 year old. I try my hardest to eat raw vegan and sometimes fails miserably, typically when bacon is involved. I love doing acro yoga with my husband and kids and I'm also an instructor, so be sure to look for my name on the class schedule too!

You'll find me at the front desk most mornings, be sure to say hello and share any suggestions for a future Community Benefit Partner.

The Joy of Gratitude

November Community Benefit Partner

Picture
PictureWomen participating in a yoga class at a local correctional facility.

We are so excited to partner with Yoga Behind Bars this November in order to benefit the physical and mental health and overall well-being of those incarcerated.

As outreach coordinator for Maya Whole Health, I was working on promotions for our Gratitude In Motion Thanksgiving benefit class.  Learning about the work of Yoga Behind Bars, I was so impressed, I added another benefit class to our schedule and volunteered to teach it myself. It’s such a good cause, I want to make sure we can give plenty of support!

Malia Dullanty, Maya Community Outreach Coordinator

From the students::

“Yoga has brought me self-awareness, better flexibility, self love and a better understanding of my body.”
Student, Washington Corrections Center for Women in Gig Harbor
“When I come to yoga class, I leave with an open clear mind. I feel that yoga gives me peace and patience without any substances other than what the body produces. It really helps my joints after sitting on hard surfaces all day and night and helps remove any stiffness. Thanks a lot.”
64 year old student,  Monroe Correctional Complex
“I started to do yoga years ago, but once I moved to another prison that had no classes, I lost focus. Being here and having yoga again, I feel healthier, happier and more balanced in my mind, body and spirit.”
47 year old student, Monroe Correctional Complex
“Jail time is often misconstrued as a time of sheer punishment, it can also be a time of healing and positivity. Yoga and meditation have helped me to open my eyes to that fact and start to use my time here effectively. Namaste.”
Student at Seattle Jail (King County Correctional Facility)

Winter is Near

11/11/2015

Picture

“The five S’s of sports training are: stamina, speed, strength, skill, and spirit; but the greatest of these is spirit.” Ken Doherty

If there is one thing most athletes have in common, its the determination to learn their sport, then excel at it. How many of us might decide to try a new sport and win the gold medal all in the same week? Of course, we don't.

We train, eat right, suss out the methods that complement our sport and include those in our daily or weekly routines. Yoga is one of the most fascinating practices in that it serves to not only hone the senses, lubricate the joints, and strengthen muscle, but also to quiet the mind and soothe the spirit. We find this simple but practical practice, enhances the ability to perform in all areas of our lives, whatever the playing field.

This winter, the mountains will call with fresh powder and beautiful views. Skiers and boarders will take to the slopes to enjoy this fragile, evolving time of year. Whether you're a seasoned pro or locking into skis for the first time.
Baron Baptiste offers advice on areas of focus specific to skiers via Yoga Journal:

"Feet should be shoulder-width apart, as if in Tadasana (Mountain Pose), to create a stable base for the body.

Knees should be in line with the toes, as in Utkatasana (Chair Pose).

Hips should be tipped slightly forward. This is a somewhat unnatural position for most people; however, ski boots help encourage this shape in the lower body. This posture helps you gain control. Boris likens it to walking down a roof: “If your hips are back, then your feet will come out from under you,” she says.

Shoulders should be dropped, or relaxed, as in Tadasana.

Torso should be still. Referred to as a “quiet upper body” in skiing, having a “still” torso is akin to riding a bicycle with the lower body doing most of the work while the upper body provides stability.

Hands should be in front of your body to encourage forward movement and to initiate pole plants.

Our bodies are designed to move. Biologically, we require continuous, regular motion. Yet, often in the winter months, we stay indoors, moving less and sitting more. Skiing satisfies our primal need for motion while reconnecting us with nature. Both novice and veteran skiers can attest to the physical and spiritual exhilaration of a day on the slopes.

To get the most from your days on skis, follow the wisdom of yogis and stretch those muscles before and after you tackle the mountain. Remember, if you stay in top shape, you can ski for free after age 70. Now, there’s something to look forward to!"

Alec Davis shares his insights:

"This workshop could be beneficial in learning how to combine or incorporate yoga with your love of being out in the snow.
Attending is an excellent way to help you expand and enhance your preparations and/or conditioning for the upcoming snow season"

Alec also works one on one with students to help them prepare for winter and all the glorious activities found therein!

Join him Saturday November 14 from 2:30-4:30 and get ready to hit the slopes!

Who are we?

Discovering Your Inner Child

10/21/2015

Picture
“Around here, however, we don't look backwards for very long. We keep moving forward, opening up new doors and doing new things, because we're curious...and curiosity keeps leading us down new paths.”
― Walt Disney Company

Sometimes we really feel our creative spirit. Maybe it's when we sing along with a favorite song, or maybe it's when we prepare a long loved dish. Often, through these activities, we become lost in time, we stop worrying about the future or obsessing over the past, and we just be. Right there in that moment, we just are. As children, we play and create with wild abandon, the world is open to infinite possibility. But as we age, the realities of life tend to push our inner artist a little deeper down. We may feel intimidated by creativity, embarrassed to sing out loud, or unsure if the dish will taste the same. Wild abandon becomes a concept, rather than a way of living.

How can you open yourself to creativity and awaken your inner child? Try any of these ideas:

  • Ask more questions. When we ask questions, we're seeking answers. Many great ideas start with a simple query.
  • Pretend. Not just for youngsters, pretending to be or do something different opens your mind to new ideas and concepts.
  • Play. Really play. Get outside and toss a football, or make up a completely new game.
  • Embrace not knowing. Maybe you don't know where to begin, or know what you might like, or know if you'll be terrible at it. Imagine it anyway, be ok with the unknown, and allow time for the process.
